Packing Tips 101

Traveling internationally? When it comes to traveling light for international travel here are some tips from our clients that can help you pack efficiently:

1. Make a packing list: Start by making a comprehensive packing list, focusing on essential items only. This will help you avoid overpacking and ensure you have everything you need.

2. Check the weather and plan accordingly: Your travel consultant/agent will alert you to the weather conditions of your destination during the time of your visit. Pack clothes that are suitable for the climate, and try to choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. If you're booking with Turning Tide, we'll be happy to offer suggestions!

3. Stick to a color scheme: Select a color scheme for your clothing that allows you to mix and match easily. This will help you create different outfits with fewer items. Don't worry about laundry, most five-star accommodations will have laundry services for you.

4. Pack lightweight clothing: Opt for lightweight and wrinkle-resistant fabrics, such as cotton blends or merino wool, which are comfortable and easy to pack. These materials are also quick-drying, making them convenient for getting caught in the rain as well as laundry on the go.

5. Use packing organizers: Utilize packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space in your suitcase and keep your belongings organized. These can help you separate different types of clothing or items and compress them to save space as well as to be able to recognize and grab them quickly. 6. Minimize toiletries: Instead of carrying full-sized toiletries, transfer them into travel-sized containers. Most full-service accommodations will offer toiletries for purchase or your concierge will find your brand locally to deliver to your room.

7. Pack multi-purpose items: Choose items that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a sarong can be used as a beach towel, a scarf, a picnic blanket, or a makeshift dress. A sarong is also perfect for a light covering if your plane gets chilly.

  1. Wear bulky items on the plane: If you're traveling with bulky items like jackets or boots, wear them during your flight to free up space in your suitcase.

  2. Limit your shoe selection: Shoes can take up a significant amount of space in your luggage. Try to limit yourself to two or three pairs of versatile shoes that can be worn with different outfits. A good walking sandal can double up for an evening out.

8. Avoid packing "just in case" items: Our Achilles heel! "But what if I need..." is a mantra we are trying to let go of! Be realistic about what you actually need. Avoid packing items based on hypothetical situations and focus on the essentials. You can often buy necessary items at your destination if needed, which frankly, is an excellent way to find locally made goods.

9. Leave room for souvenirs: If you plan to bring back souvenirs, ensure you have some space available in your luggage or consider packing a foldable duffle bag that can be used as an extra bag for your return journey. Our pro tip: Wearable souvenirs are the perfect way to travel home. Think jewelry + textiles.

Remember that specific travel requirements may vary depending on your destination and personal preferences. Your travel agent will have the airline's baggage restrictions and any relevant travel advisories before your trip.
